The story behind the photo: This image of the Upper Falls was taken
near Uncle Tom's Trail with a automatic zoom lens camera. One can
see the force of this falls that was historian Chittenden's favorite.
The Upper Falls of the Yellowstone River, 109 feet high, spills into the
beginnings of The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone soon to be followed by
the much steeper drop of the Lower Falls. I took this photo and a
couple others from the same spot zooming in and out. This shot zooms
in on the falls itself and makes quite visible a platform of people standing
at the overlook of the falls. Behind the falls is the Chittenden
Memorial Bridge, which replaced a bridge originally built by the great
roadbuilder and Yellowstone historian Hiram Chittenden, whose history is
still the classical literature on the subject. Personally, my love
is for the Lower Falls more than the upper, but only guiltily so.
To the right of me when I took the picture is a barely noticed falls called
Crystal Falls. So many people are absorbed witht the sight of this
falls that they do not even notice the very pretty falls off to the right.
But, that too is quite visible from this very spot. The Canyon area
means so much to me for so many reasons, so many more reasons than for
its sheer beauty. My life experiences there have been phenomenal
to say the least, but something in this land inspires life to be life and
seems to heighten the opportunity for special moments. Believe it
or not, my fondest memories have been in the dark. It is hard to
believe that in a place where the eyes have such a feast.
