What is Chakradance?

"CHAKRADANCE™," to quote the website, "is a well-being movement practice. It uses spontaneous dance, to specific chakra-resonant music, for the purpose of healing and re-tuning your whole energy system."

I encourage you all to go to that page and read the eloquent description of what the dance is and its purpose. Here I want to break it down more simply.

Chakradance classes involve both meditation and moving meditation, sharing and creative exercises, generally using mandala art. You arrive into a sacred space with the lights low, having the intention of letting go of your day and being present in the space. We have a short meditation, introduce ourselves, and share. Then, we warm up and dance to music composed for each of the seven chakras. If we are in a course, we may then dance focused on the chakra for that week. Finally, we do a creative exercise with mandala art, share whatever may have come up for us, and finish with a short closing meditation.

However, we are not really done because things often came up in us during the dance. The mandala art serves as a reminder of our dance experience, and much of the time between classes is spent integrating it all.

Chakradance, then, is a dance practice whose intention is an inner journey to work out within us whatever we need to work out. It's good for our bodies, but the dance practice intends to unlock what is in our souls.

That's heavy stuff! However, this is stuff we all need. Since our eyes are closed, no one is watching or judging you. There is also no such thing as being good at "Chakradancing." You are in a safe space where what happens and is shared in the room stays in the room. As a facilitator, I'm also not judging you, or fixing you, or doing anything but holding the dance space and doing whatever I can to help you on your journey.

And though we are doing serious work on ourselves, trust me when I say that it's also a lot of fun!

A Brief Introduction to the Seven Chakras

We are dancing to chakras, but what are they? Here is a brief overview of each.

Imagine them in a straight line moving up from the base of your spine and up to the crown of your head, each signified by a color of the rainbow.

  • Base Chakra – Located at the base of the spine in the tailbone area. It represents our sense of being grounded, our safety, and security.
  • Sacral Chakra – In the lower abdomen below the navel. This feminine chakra is about openness of our feelings, new experiences, and our sexuality.
  • Solar Plexus Chakra – Just above the navel and into the stomach. A masculine chakra, it is about being confident and assertive, feeling comfortable, and taking up our own space.
  • Heart Chakra – Located in the center of the chest. This is about love and openness to love; it's the fusion of our feminine and masculine selves.
  • Throat Chakra – Centered in the throat. It deals with our ability to find our voice, communicate, and express what is uniquely true of us.
  • Third-Eye Chakra – Found in the forehead between your two eyes. This is about our intuition, our imagination, and our ability to make decisions.
  • Crown Chakra – Located at the top of the head. This relates to connecting spiritually and outside of ourselves, to feeling connected with all that is.

An Invitation

My invitation is for you to find what thousands of others have found—the unravelling of blocked energy, a deepened connection to your true, authentic self, and the feeling of coming home. Blending free-flowing movements with particular frequencies of sound, Chakradance™ will free the energy in your body and open you to a deeper experience of life. A healing dance/movement practice, which draws on a fusion of worldviews and musical styles, Chakradance aims to restore health to our chakras—the energy centers that, in Eastern tradition, are the gateways to integrating mind, body, and spirit.

In a darkened room, lit only by candlelight, we move with our eyes closed, and our attention turned inwards. For unlike most other dance practices, Chakradance is about making a connection with our inner world—the world of our imagination, feelings, intuition, and senses.

Welcome to Chakradance. Come and explore. Have fun. Find meaning. Let go. Come and look deeper into each chakra, each part of you, and experience more within the dance that is uniquely yours.

If you think this might be for you, inquire about taking a class.
